Habitat

Nest on shallow freshwater lakes with emergent vegetation. When not breeding, they can also be found along saltwater coasts.

Range

Primarily found in western U.S. states and in parts of Mexico and Canada. Breeding zones extend inland as far east as the Dakotas in the United States and the lower parts of the central Canadian provinces. In winter, can be found along the coasts. Can be found year-round in parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and central Mexico.

Did you know?

Up until 1985, these Grebes were also considered Western Grebes. Although they do also live and breed in the western half of North America, they are generally smaller than their counterparts. They can also be distinguished by the fact that the black on their heads does not cover their eyes as it does with the Western Grebe. These two groups form a “superspecies” and often hybridize where their ranges overlap.
