Habitat

Prefers dry scrubland and open woods with oak, pinyon pine, and juniper. Some populations prefer riparian willow thickets in canyons. Can also be found in suburban areas and parks.

Range

Year-round found inland in southwestern United States and Central Mexico.

Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jays can sometimes be seen perched on mule deer, picking off and eating ticks and parasites. The deer seem to appreciate this partnership as they stand still and raise their ears to give the jays access to the harder-to-reach ticks.
