Habitat
Nests in freshwater marshes. Winters in coastal saltmarshes.
Range
Very limited nesting grounds including at Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. Two populations are found year-round in central Florida and Louisiana. In winter, they can be found in Texas (at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge) and along the Platte River in Nebraska with Sandhill Cranes.
Did you know?
The tallest of all North American birds, it is also one of the rarest. In the 1940s, there were only about 20 left. Conservation efforts have brought back populations to around 600 today.
