These birds are known for stashing their food in cracks of trees. In the Ojibwe language, the word for Red-headed Woodpecker is “baapaase” thus the sentence Mitigong ondanjige baapaase. Mii iwe gaa-onji-bagone’waad mitigoo’ translated into English means: A redheaded woodpecker gets its food from a tree. That’s why it makes holes in the tree.
